Reiki flute is a method devised by Mikey Kirkpatrick (aka Bird Radio) that brings together nearly 30 years of flute and reiki practice. By reiki practice, I mean giving attention to the state of mind and body with an aim to reconnect and rediscover instincts and intuitions. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and has a different daily focus such as symbols, nature, the elements or chakras. The sessions are improvised and broadcast live on air via Wild Lakes Radio (using the Mixlr platform) daily at 10am everyday. This project began on 29th March 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown. Every week a new volume will be published, free to stream, but also available to download.

You can listen while doing something else, or use the sessions to complement your own practice such as meditation, yoga, writing, movement, or anything else that feels right for you.

This volume focuses on visualising and imagining the natural elements of water, fire, earth, light, air and space. I use them as a starting point for colours, melodies and shapes, following their intensities, depths and atmospheres as they lead me to new melodies and harmonies. I use Pauline Oliveros' 'Deep Listening' techniques and exercises to tune into sounds and catch them, then play them, like fishing. I repeat held notes at the beginning of each session as a way to enter the space, resonate the room, and listen for feedback. In addition, I draw from ancient Arabic and Asian scales, the oldest in the world, as I found them to contain fascinating colours. Nothing is pre-recorded, I improvise, loop and layer all sounds live.

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th Century and is used worldwide to reduce tension. For each of these 30 minute sessions I visualised the reiki symbol associated with balancing and releasing emotional blocks: Sei Hei Ki. This is a helpful tool for improvisation.
