about

Originally titled 'Flute Loop Improvisation for Unblocking and Safe Passage'. I made this for my students in a third round of classes I gave on 'Music, Healing and Deep Listening' which weaves together fragments of my personal research into the relationship between sound (sound itself, making it and listening to it) and ideas around healing in a range of cultures. I have been teaching the course for Morbid Anatomy's online class series where some incredible independent educators and practitioners explore the spaces where art, death, science and curiosity intersect with seekers and students all across the globe. At the end of this third version of my class I returned to my flute loop improvisations that had inspired me to create this course in the first place. During the pandemic lockdowns in the UK I broadcast over 200 such improvisations live via radio, each based on a different image, idea or theme. This is a short improvisation (relative to others I have done) where I focused on unblocking internal and external barriers, and safe passage in the process of doing so. Obviously my mind went to Ukraine, but so many other places of conflict and pain, hence the tears I had to push through around 2/3rds of the way through. This is also the first time I have filmed myself doing one of these improvisations. For clarity, I am controlling a loop pedal and effect pedal with my feet - everything is created live with bells, voice and flute.

Over 30 years ago I was sat down learning to make sounds with my flute. It has been in my bag with me ever since. One thing I am sure of is that there is something inside that I need to communicate, and this, for now, is still the closest I can get to expressing it.

This is the little I have learned.
